Bagel Me!

Located in the newly renovated building at 60 Plaza Square, Bagel Me! is THE place to go for bagels baked fresh all though the day, plus sandwiches made on bagels, heaping salads, and plenty of other gourmet goodies.  As owner of three of nine other Bagel Me! locations in Orange County, Stuart Golub has long wanted to open a location in Old Towne Orange.  So far, the results are as satisfying as the food he serves.

“We have been so pleased with the flow of customers since we opened in February,” said Stuart.  “We just put out the tables and chairs in the sidewalk area for the first time a few days ago and they are already full of happy guests throughout the day.  We’re selling many more hamburgers and barbecued ranch chicken salads here than at any of our other locations. The French fries and nachos are flying out the door!”

The Bagel Me! building was built in 1888, notes Stuart, who says major time and money were spent retrofitting the site to accommodate a modern-day restaurant.  From start to finish, the project took two years to complete and cost nearly $1 million.

According to Stuart, Bagel Me! in Old Towne gets a lot of take-out business from local college students.  The eatery will stay open even later as the staff develops, thanks to the many requests from customers for longer hours.

“Right now we are open from 6 a.m. until late in the afternoon and into the evenings on the weekends,” Stuart says.  “Many of our customers who frequented Diedrich’s before they closed have asked us to stay open in the evenings because they miss having a place to hang out and drink their coffee while watching the sunset.  We plan to provide that spot.  Soon we’ll be open more evenings as well.”

Bagel Me! has a feel-good atmosphere of familiarity. In fact, one of Bagel Me!’s new managers is Steve, a former Dietrich’s star employee who has plenty of followers.  “He seems to know half the customers who walk in here by name!” says Stuart.

Stuart enjoys the connections he feels in Old Towne Orange. After all, he’s from here.  “My family has deep ties in Orange, as we have lived here for 30 years and raised our four kids here,” said Stuart.  “In fact, my wife Valerye graduated from Chapman back when it was called Chapman College and my oldest daughter Ashleigh is currently a grad student at Chapman as well, and my son goes to El Modena High.”
